Once upon a time, drink mixology was an art only professional bartenders knew. Now, thankfully, that is not the case.
Home-tainment is a popular choice that helps modern families save a bit of cash while enjoying time with friends.
In the USA there is a trend in liquor bars closing but liquor stores increasing and, according to Business Insider, there are two primary reasons we like to socialise in our own homes, versus going out.
The first reason is technology.
With Spotify and Apple Music at our fingertips, a plethora of food delivery services and the ability to order pretty much anything to our doorstep when we need it, why do we need to visit a bar or restaurant for new music and good food?
Second, is price.
Since the recession, the majority of us have had to tighten our belts when it comes to eating and drinking out. Millennials and Gen-Z are particularly budget-conscious with 59% of millennials and 52% of Gen-Z saying that cost is the main factor in drink selection, versus 44% of all consumers.
What is domestic drink mixology?
Alongside these lifestyle trends, we have the growing popularity of cocktails and mixed drinks.
Some bar owners think that popular culture, like American hip hop and Hollywood movies are the cause of the shift towards spirits such as Cognac.
There are also a great deal more craft spirits being distilled - in the US there are more than 1,000 craft distilleries.
In short, we have access to a wider range of spirits than we ever have before.
So, as consumers we are taking all of these influences and our love for home-tainment and becoming what’s coined as ‘domestic mixologists’.
We learn, practice and experiment with drink mixology in our own homes, whether we have an expertly designed home bar, drinks cabinet in the corner, or a trendy kitchen cart we pull out during parties.
How do we learn drink mixology?
Besides traditional recipe books and Google, we now have Drinkstagrammers. Yep, they are a thing.
Drinkstagrammers are celebrity bartenders and accounts dedicated to drink mixology.
They delight us with daily cocktail-making inspiration in the form of thirst-quenching photography, how-to videos, and detailed captions that share recipes, stories and tips for mixing the tastiest drinks, right in your own home.
Did you know there are photographers whose sole job is to shoot photos of cocktails around the world? Neat job!
